A Guide to Lead Recycling

Lead is one of the materials with the best recycling rate, although it isn’t everyone’s first thought when they think about metal recycling – usually, it’s copper, or aluminium, or steel. As a matter of fact, recycled lead is essentially the same quality as primary lead and it’s used for around 50% of the production of lead products.

Here at Craddock Metal Recycling Limited, we are metal recycling experts and have been since 1943, so we talk you through lead recycling in our latest blog post below.

Quality

Being able to be remelted infinitely without losing quality is what helps recycled lead maintain the quality of primary lead from ore. This feeds into why lead-based batteries are one of, if not the, most recycled consumer products in the world and why recycling lead is so cost-effective and efficient.

Worldwide Recycling

In Europe, roughly 74% of lead comes from recycled stock, and this same figure is almost 100% for the US. Furthermore, the recycling rate for lead is nearly 100% in both the US and Europe, which means we are continuing to recycle and re-recycle lead across the world.

Cost-Effective and Efficient

One of the reasons that makes lead recycling so lucrative is that it’s cost-effective. This is, in part, due to how easy it is to identify and recover, but also because it’s the perfect material for a circular economy.

The efficiency of lead recycling also helps to keep costs down and make it a viable and lucrative business with it taking around 60% less energy to produce recycled lead than primary lead from ore.

Environment

Recycling as a concept is essential for maintaining our environment, and with lead, this is no different. As a matter of fact, it’s arguably more important because lead batteries are a hazardous waste – for human health and the natural environment – so recycling lead helps to conserve the environment two-fold.

Top Recycled Metal

While there is still room for improvement in some of the processes involved in lead recycling, it’s quite clearly already one of the best metals to be recycled – shown in the properties it boasts and the economy that has already gathered around it.
